It is a foregone conclusion that virtually every resort community will
feature golf as the primary recreational attraction and the centerpiece
of environmental appeal. Fairfield Mountains has not one but two, 18 hole
championship courses to offer and full service country clubs (Bald Mountain
and Apple Valley) to go along with each of them. Dan Maples, the celebrated
golf architect, designed the course at Apple Valley. Much of the residential
development is built on sites bordering the two fairways.
Lake
Lure, sharing its shoreline with a portion of the Fairfield Mountains
perimeter, is a recreational playground of no small proportion. Everything
from powerboats and sailboats to canoes and water skis can be rented at
the 120-slip lakeside Fairfield marina. A private beach with cabana is
just around the bend, with nearby amenities that include indoor and outdoor
swimming pools, miniature golf, four lighted tennis courts, and three
restaurants. The lake, along with the trout stream at its entrance, provides
year-round enjoyment for avid anglers. Large and small mouth bass, rainbow
trout, crappie, several varieties of catfish, and perch are among the
prime prospects for catch of the day.
Walking, hiking, and horseback riding trails through peaceful woodlands
and alongside mountain glades often lead to hidden waterfalls and magnificent
overlooks. Chimney Rock, within hiking distance from Fairfield Mountains,
is a giant 26 story-high monolith within a 1,000-acre park. Nature trails
lead to a dramatic view of Hickory Nut Falls, one of the truly inspirational
natural wonders of Western North Carolina. Less than an hour's drive to
the north is the town of Marion, where one can discover Little Switzerland
and Emerald Village, open to the public for mining precious and semiprecious
gemstones.
Horse lovers can drive south just a few miles into neighboring Polk County
to visit the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center. There they will behold
a 210 acre complex with a steeplechaser course, show rings, a carriage
trail and a busy calendar of horsemanship events.
Fairfield
Mountains is near several highly attractive cultural, educational, and
recreational centers - Asheville, less than 40 miles to the northwest
and the Hendersonville, Flat Rock and Brevard cluster of towns to the
southwest, within a 20 to 30 mile distance. Each of these areas has unique
enticements, some of which draw national and international attention.
Asheville is replete with folk art showcases, historic Civil War landmarks,
first-rate museums, art galleries and exhibition halls, music, dance and
theater companies, and an especially notable farmer's market. The Biltmore
Estate features a 250 room European chateau built in French-Renaissance
style by George Vanderbilt, grandson of tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt and
furnished with priceless antiques and art.
The University of North Carolina in Asheville is the focus of one of
the nation's most innovative institutes dealing with the opportunities
and challenges of older Americans - the Center for Creative Retirement.
This nationally recognized program provides educational options for seniors
and foster intergenerational relationships and sharing experiences with
UNCA students, among many other unique components.
For a town with a population of about 10,400, Hendersonville has a remarkable
array of community resources. It is believed to be the smallest community
in the country to support a full symphony orchestra. The North Carolina
Arboretum, described as "the most beautiful natural setting of any
American public garden," offers workshops and seminars to botanical
aficionados from far and wide. Just outside the downtown ore is a 32 lane
bowling center. Huge municipal parks, miles of nature trails, and impressively
endowed YMCA complex all contribute to a wealth of recreational amenities.
Nearby Flat Rock Playhouse is rated as one of the top 10 summer theaters
in the United States. The Henderson County Public Library is considered
one of the finest of its size in the state. The Brevard Music Center,
just a few miles further down the road, enjoys an international reputation
as an educational and performance Mecca, showcasing the talents of students,
faculty, and notable guest artists during a seven week summer season.
